The one thing that most modern businesses have in common is the need for good IT solutions. In this day and age you can’t run a business without using computers, as the use of computers is something that boosts productivity and makes everything you do more efficient.

With any IT situation you have, you’ll almost always need to have some sort of IT maintenance service that you can call when you’re in need. Most businesses don’t have the personnel on staff to fix their IT-related problems, and therefore opt to outsource. When you have to choose a good company to do your IT maintenance and support, there are a few tips that you should follow to ensure that you get the best service for the best price.

Make Sure They Offer What You Need

First of all, you should make sure that the firm is qualified to handle your problems. Some companies decide to barrage potential clientele with highly specific jargon and terms that are unintelligible to the inexperienced. Sometimes they are assuming that you understand them, and at other times they simply want to confuse you and thereby get you to hire them.

Whatever the case, you have to be sure that they know what you need, and that you know what they offer. Be clear on the fact that they can and will help you, and find out what it will cost. Don’t decide too quickly or out of confusion and end up with a contract that you don’t like.

Work Specific

In accordance with the first tip, you should make sure that they do handle your problem if it is a very specific one. For instance, if you have a machine with very specific programming, find a firm that can handle that particular problem. You don’t want someone who wastes your time fiddling about blindly, so be specific in your requests and specific in your searching.

Find Out Offers

The last important tip on choosing your maintenance and support firm is to see what offers they have which are relevant to your needs. For instance, if you run a whole chain of stores and need maintenance for all of them, then some IT firms will offer a package deal. Maybe you have a sister company who needs the deal as well, and you could get a discount. Find out what they have to offer that you can make use of, and you may come across something that is more than worth the price.

As technologies continue to evolve and improve, cloud computing services are slowly taking over the scene and updating the information technology industry in ways previously unimaginable. When it first appeared on the scene, the cloud was widely blamed, feared and regarded as a profoundly non-viable option for ‘serious businesses’. However, as major 2011 events proved, the cloud is a viable solution after all, with major businesses worldwide having migrated and continuing to do so to the day. Since 2012 has just begun, it’s worth wondering, researching, exploring and investigating to figure out what next year’s major cloud developments will be. Opinions on the matter tend to be divided, with experts still arguing on whether security, for instance, will become a deal-breaker when it comes to the cloud. Time alone shall tell; but for the moment, let us explore some potential cloud trends for the year that has just started.

The Trend Cycle

Cloud expert Tim Crawford has come up with a visual analysis of the evolution of cloud computing trends, which seems to indicate that people are getting somewhat tired of discussing the cloud. Indeed, like any topic that captures mainstream interest for a prolonged period of time, the popularity of the cloud, too, seems to have rather run its course. According to Gartner and several other voices in the industry, the cloud peaked in terms of popularity over the course of the previous two to five years, with issues such as private cloud computing, platform as a service, cloud security and infrastructure as a service riding the crest of the hype wave. Cloud or web-based platforms have come to be generally regarded as failed experiences over the same span of time. Meanwhile, emerging trends, that might rejuvenate the industry in 2012 are dedicated email services, cloud advertising and sales force automation, which has taken over the scene for less than two years now.

Search Statistics Point to Plateau

According to Google search finds, the peak of cloud computing searches online was reached in the latter part of the second semester in 2011. As last year drew to a close, the situation with respect to the number of searches settled down. Apparently, the market has reached a saturation point when it comes to hype and has proceeded to a perceived ‘flattening’.

The Worldwide Cloud

An analysis of locations that recur in top results list indicate that the United States of America is losing ground in the face of emerging economies around the globe. While the US held the number seven position by cloud volume search index results, it saw a fall down to number ten in said chart in January 2012. The chart is currently lead by India, Singapore and Hong Kong, with Ireland, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Australia occupying the remainder of the positions in the ranking. Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune in India dominate the worldwide cities chart, while the US state chart by the same criteria is led by Maryland, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Cisco Business Growth with Singh

Despite the scandal which has been around Inder Singh lately, the Cisco VP or
Corporate Portfolio Management has been doing his job well. Since Singh joined
up with Cisco in 2008, the company has made some very progressive moves forward
and expanding into a range of tech industries.

At a conference about stocks growths which was sponsored by Robert W. Baird,
Inder Singh talked about the Cisco strategy for growth in the tech industry.

“We started off with areas like storage and security, but really what we did
was we invested to grow $1 billion businesses just around our core business. It
was a strategy that worked well.”

The recent acquisition of the company Tannberg is a good example of Cisco’s
growth strategy. Even though Tannberg and Cisco products overlapped in many
ways, Tannberg was generally viewed as the superior for the niche.

Aside from its acquisitions, Cisco has also made some very important business
gains recently. Comcast has chosen to use the Cisco Aggregation Services Router
9000 (ASR 9000) Series for connecting businesses located in 20+ vital US
markets. These routers are specially designed for delivering mass amounts of
internet traffic and video, both of which will be crucial for businesses. This
technology is made so that it can be grown along with the market need, thus
providing a steady future growth for Cisco.

The ASR 900 is especially optimized for video. As Singh said at the
Baird-sponsored conference, ““we look at the video area as not just a set of
point solutions or point products, but we look at it as the evolution of a
portfolio.”

The influence of Inder Singh can also be seen with the release of the Cisco
Cius business tablet. Even though the Cisco Cius is late on the scene compared
to the BlackBerry Playbook and iPad, it is succeeding in a way that these other
tablets could not. Why? Because Cisco is using their existing technology to make
a comprehensive tablet which offers a multi-faceted business solution.

Some of the impressive tech aspects of the Cisco Cius include using Cisco
TelePresence video conference, Cisco WebEx for having meetings online, Cisco
Quad for social collaborations, Cisco United Presence for IM and emailing, and
Cisco Unified Communications for phone/voice capabilities.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Cisco now that Inder Singh is
in the hot seat. The VP helped Cisco get onto the “hot” lists of many investing
resources, such as TickerSpy.com amongst many others.

In the future from Cisco, we can already expect a large-scale surveillance
project for China. This is a massive ongoing project which will help build up a
framework for China’s interior defense. Also, Cisco has launched the Enterprise
Content Delivery System (ECDS). These new products will focus on delivering
video on demand and live video. What makes the ECDS products stand out is their
ease of use which even non IT savvy users will be able to install and configure.

Hard drive is the essential part of a computer that makes it work and perform the tasks that you intend to do with it. The concept of having external hard drives is similar to that of carrying a memory stick. The only difference is, you can keep a lot more data into it. I was quite surprised to find out about the capacity of data that you can carry around with you with external hard drives. Some of them, like the one from Transcend StoreJet 35T allow you to keep up to 1.5 terabyte of data in it.

There are too many of them out there to choose from, so how are you going to know which one is right for you? The most important thing that you need to find out about is, whether the external hard drive is compatible with different types of processer available out there. You will need one that can be used on most of the common operating system that are available out there.

The next feature that you need to keep in mind is of course, the capacity of data that it allows you to keep in it. Most of the external hard drives being sold nowadays comes in as low as 250 GB storage capacity.

Can you imagine the pain of losing very important information that you badly need? You should make it a point to have a good backup utility that comes with any external hard drive that you purchase. You’ll probably need to bear with it while for the backup system is running but trust me, it will worth it.

These are some of the important criteria that you need to set when buying your next external hard drive, so be wise and have fun shopping!
