ECC Memory: A Random Access Memory (RAM)

ECC RAM is an acronym which stands for Error Checking and Correction Random Access Memory. As the acronym signifies, ECC Memory is one of the types of RAM or Random Access Memory. With the utilization of ECC RAM, this allows the system to trace and correct single bit errors. The disadvantage, however, of this memory is that it cannot correct multiple bit errors, that is why ECC Memory is not normally recommended for personal computers used at home because personal computers used at home are shut down regularly, sometimes they are not even use for days. If the error crashes the server, it crashes the entire network, unlike if what crashes is only a personal computer at home or what we called client, it does not automatically affect other computers even if it is connected to a network. This is why ECC memory is recommended for servers rather than for clients.

ECC Memory is also of two (2) types. It is either buffered or unbuffered, if your ECC is buffered, it can hold data temporarily for one whole clock cycle before it is transported. This, however, foregoes speed due to the extra clock cycle. On the other hand, if your ECC is unbuffered, the system is allowed directly to access every memory chip on the module. This, however, foregoes a little bit of its reliability despite its being faster that the registered or buffered ECC.

Most users rather choose non- ECC Memory or unbuffered ECC than ECC Memory or buffered ECC probably for the following reasons:

  1. ECC Memory is costly than the non- ECC Memory;
  2. The motherboard that supports ECC functionality in RAM is likewise costly; and probably
  3. ECC Memory controllers need additional time to check and correct the error.

Here, it is up to you whether to choose ECC Memory or non-ECC Memory. If you are to use a server you may better utilize ECC Memory but if you are going to use a client and you are up for a maximum speed, better choose non-ECC Memory.

Every computer needs memory to work properly. The integral computer memory is called the Random Access Memory or also known as RAM for short. These clocks occur very quickly in computers (millions of times per second) but still the computer bus eventually bound the speed of the memory. The memory and processor can both manage high-elevated clock speeds, although if the speed of the system bus is at a low level, they will be bounded by the lowest possible speed. It is crucial that they all work at comparable speeds to operate with efficiency. As an example, SDR SDRAM are available in PC66, PC100 and PC133; these numbers correlates to the clock speed of the RAM measured in megahertz (a million cycles per second): 55 MHz, 100MHz, and so on. In case the system bus speed rate is at 100 MHz and the memory is at 66 MHz, thus the memory is not working as fast as it may be and it is recommended to purchase a PC100 memory. Of course, if PC133 was bought for the system above, the additional 33 MHz would automatically be wasted because the system bus can only manage 100 MHz.

Double Data Rate (DDR) memory is quite similar to conventional SDRAM except it transfers data two times during each clock cycle. This increases the transfer rate of the memory by twice as much while the system bus remains the same. Thus a 100 MHz system bus that manages DDR memory can successfully utilize 200 MHz RAM. DDR are available in various speeds, each of them with two designations. Somewhere in the specifications or on the box, the memory will be labeled as DDR-xxx, where the xxx is substituted by the suitable clock speed of the memory like 200 in the example above. Also, it will list a PC-xxxx number, where xxxx signifies the bandwidth of the whole memory stick. This is not mainly essential to understand for beginners. The most usual are: DDR-200/PC-1600 that works at a clock speed of 100 MHz (effectively 200 MHz), DDR-266/PC-2100, which works at 133 MHz (effectively 266 MHz), DDR-333/PC-2700, working at 166 MHz (333 MHz) and DDR-400/PC-3200, which works at 200 MHz (400 MHz).
